Pain in Pregnancy & Labour
Abdominal or tummy pain that is severe and lasts for a few hours may also need to be investigated. In some cases abdominal pain can be due to the womb getting bigger however sometimes severe pain in early pregnancy can be a sign of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy growing outside of the womb) – this needs urgent medical attention.
If this is something you are experiencing please contact your local maternity unit or attend A&E.
Mild pain in early pregnancy is not uncommon and you may have some discomfort due to your body stretching and changing shape. If you experience severe pain, or pain with vaginal bleeding or need to pass urine more frequently, you need to contact your GP, Emergency Department or Maternity Ward for advice.
